On May 10, the Society was invited to attend the 2022 Guangxi Guigang LNG Shipbuilding Central Commencement Ceremony and New Energy Vessel Application Technology Exchange Event, held in Guiping. Groundbreaking Ceremony
This morning, a centralized groundbreaking ceremony was held for the construction of LNG‑powered vessels in Guigang. The first batch of 25 inland LNG‑propelled ships to be built in Guigang will be equipped with LNG power packages and related technical services provided by Suzhou Zhibang Company.

Technical Exchange
In the afternoon, a technical exchange event on new‑energy vessel applications was held. During the seminar session, the focus was on new‑energy ship technologies, with the proceedings chaired by Wang Guoqing, General Manager of Suzhou Zhibang’s marine business. Director Chen Wenjie, representing the association, delivered a keynote address.
The main topics of the technical exchange included: the current status and future prospects of LNG‑powered vessels (presented by Li Kun, Director of the Water Transport Science Research Institute of the Ministry of Transport); technical standards for LNG‑fuelled ships and bunkering (presented by Xu Jianyong, Chief Expert at the Wuhan Standards Research Institute of the China Classification Society); technologies related to marine LNG storage tanks and safety management systems (presented by Zhang Ruiqing, General Manager of Suzhou Zhibang Company); research and development as well as applications of alternative‑fuel marine engines (presented by Wang Yanrui, Deputy Director of the Technology Center at Zibo Diesel Engine Co., Ltd.); and the physicochemical properties of LNG along with leak‑prevention and safety measures (presented by Professor Lü Zhiyong, General Manager of the Shaoguan Research Institute of Wuhan University of Technology). In addition, discussions were held on inspection standards for the construction of LNG‑powered vessels, CNOOC’s network of refueling stations and associated services in Guangdong and Guangxi, and the planning and development of the Xijiang (Guiping) Shipbuilding Industrial Park.

Technical Exchange
With the introduction and implementation of the national strategies of “dual circulation” and “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality,” coupled with the Ministry of Transport’s 2020 issuance of the “Outline for the Development of Inland Navigation,” significant guidance and impetus have been provided to foster the growth of the inland vessel‑building industry across provinces and municipalities. Furthermore, in March this year, the National Energy Administration released the “14th Five-Year Plan for a Modern Energy System,” which explicitly calls for measures—such as encouraging the use of clean fuels like liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the shipping sector—addressing the marine and shipbuilding equipment industries, thereby opening up new opportunities for enterprises in the maritime and related sectors.
The landscapes of Guangdong and Guangxi are contiguous; the inland river basins of Guangxi constitute the upper reaches of South China’s inland waterway network and form an integral part of the Green Pearl River. Jointly developing green shipping in South China is a key component of the national strategy to build a transportation powerhouse and achieve the dual carbon goals. Accordingly, strengthening exchanges and cooperation on new‑energy vessel technologies between Guangdong and Guangxi will be a major focus for future collaborative efforts in the maritime sector.
As the shipping and maritime industries enter a new phase of development, Guangdong and Guangxi are jointly fostering green shipping in South China—a task that requires sustained effort. Guigang City boasts distinct advantages in inland waterway location, industrial capacity, and labor resources, while Guangdong brings strengths in scientific and technological innovation, proven best practices, and a pool of high‑caliber technical talent. By leveraging their complementary strengths, sharing resources, and advancing in tandem, the two regions can drive high‑quality growth in the shipbuilding sector, thereby making a significant contribution to the economic development of both areas.
Guangdong’s shipbuilding industry has accumulated significant expertise in green ship technologies, as well as in smart ships, shipyard digitalization, intelligent manufacturing, and environmentally friendly shipbuilding. The Guangdong–Guangxi Shipbuilding Engineering Society will actively establish platforms for exchange, working together to advance both the development of green vessels and the implementation of green shipbuilding practices in tandem.
Guiping City, located in the Guiping area of the Xijiang River’s golden waterway, is an important inland shipbuilding and repair hub in Guangxi, with its annual shipbuilding capacity accounting for more than 70% of the region’s total deadweight tonnage. Zhongshan Chuangyuan Power Co., Ltd. and Suzhou Zhibang Co., Ltd. have successively established a strong presence in the Xijiang Shipbuilding Industrial Park, playing a pioneering and exemplary role in providing high‑quality ancillary services to the shipbuilding industry chain across Guangdong and Guangxi.
